A lot of my time is spent on fact checking one thing or another here at Hole in the Head Press.
Unfortunately, the second edition of Rings of Supersonic Steel has been found to contain a few factual errors. We're working hard to correct these things in Rings of Supersonic Steel III. In addition, I'm trying to ensure that new errors don't creep into the third edition.
As a micro-publisher, I just assumed that it's my responsibility to publish material that is as accurate as possible.
Apparently, not so with Random House. They take the position that it's "too expensive" to do fact checking and depend upon their authors to be truthful along with warranty clauses in their contracts that hold the author responsible for the truthfulness of the work.
Actually, there is a clause in my publishing agreement were the author certifies that his work is true to the best of his knowledge and is based upon diligent research and if the work is biographical or "as told to" the incidents in the work are true and accurate.
Well stuff sometimes happens, and even though the author thought he got it right, sometimes it ain't so.
So, I find myself following up on feedback from my readers who helpfully point out errors and omissions in the text. I then bug my author about revising this or that portion of the work after we agree that there is in fact, an error. While this is time consuming and tedious, it ultimately makes for a better product.
I just thought you would like to know that not all publishers are like Random House.
